The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History boasts the world's largest natural history collection that will inspire several "oohs' and "aahs" from visitors of all ages. Among the highly dramatic and memorable exhibits are a 70 million-year-old dinosaur egg, an incredible giant squid, and a look at a truly unforgettable tarantula feeding that will inspire several gasps among all who view it. In addition to all of these exhibits, the museum offers even more adventures via the 3-D IMAX theater within its facility.

The Virginia Wine Expo is the oldest celebration of its kind on the East Coast and is regularly attended by wine aficionados from all over the country. Sixty of the state's top wineries are on hand to display their wares, but this celebration goes far beyond just tasting some of the best wines from the various participants. There are also seminars, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, gourmet food and an outdoor art and craft show. The event is held every September.

The Capital Crescent Trail is one of the area's most popular. This 11-mile trail begins in Silver Spring, Maryland, curves westward through Maryland into Washington, DC and ends in the heart of historic Georgetown. One of the most emotionally-charged sites in Washington, DC is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The dark, black granite walls are inscribed with the 58,209 names of Americans missing or killed in the Vietnam conflict. This V-shaped memorial design draws you in and allows you to not only take in the monument's magnitude, but it also allows you to have a private, intimate moment within the monument's breadth. While you're visiting this monumental attraction, make sure you see Frederick Hart's "Three Soldiers" life-sized sculpture made of bronze that portrays three young servicemen.
