Founded in 1837 as "Terminus," Atlanta's roots stretch back to just before the Civil War and beyond. The city's past includes an important role in transportation development with the arrival of the Western and Atlantic Railroad; the Civil War, as it was the site of many pivotal battles like Peachtree Creek and the Battle of Atlanta. Decades later the city became a major organizing hub for the Civil Rights Movement. This being said, it's all too obvious that Atlanta is a city steeped in history and culture.
