New York City has Central Park. Not to be outdone, Macon has Central City Park. This lush, expansive swath of greenery is a true haven for city-dwelling nature lovers. While the park is a popular lunch destination for the many nearby cubicle-bound office workers, it also offers urbanites a great place to enjoy some quality time doing fun outdoor activities. Central City Park features various ball fields, basketball courts and big expansive areas to just play and throw the frisbee around. Designated picnic areas, a good variety of playground equipment for the kids, and a winding walking path only add to the park's appeal.
Take advantage of the fact that your kids are naturally curious by giving them plenty to be curious about when you bring them to the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Macon. This impressive museum can be considered a type of window to the world with all of its educational and highly entertaining exhibits and attractions. The recently-added third floor brings even more exploratory fun, as it features an artist's garret, humanist's study, scientist's workshop and an enclosed animal habitat.
Macon's Cox Capitol Theatre possesses an impressive cachet of classic style. Originally built in 1916, this is the place where area audiences first experienced movies that featured sound, then known as “talkies.” Things have progressed quite impressively here, as the entertainment venue still screens some of today's most acclaimed art films and import titles with the help of state of the art sound and projection equipment. But movies aren't the only attraction here, as live music, touring acts and more are always on the ever-busy marquee.
