You can find several monuments and attractions commemorating George Washington throughout the states of Maryland and Virginia. The Washington Monument State Park contains the first monument built for the first President. Visit the iconic, star-shaped Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. Best known for its role during the War of 1812, this fort is the one that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner." Stop by the visitor´s center for information about the history and culture of this site, or learn more about nature and science at this expansive landmark attraction.
