Since 1960 the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge has protected the New Jersey wildlife and its habitat. One of 553 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System, the Great Swamp has become a home and resting ground for fox, deer, muskrat, turtles, fish, frogs and more than 244 species of birds.
