Beach music is a sub-genre of rock and roll that influenced the sound of early 60s music, and its origins were right here along the South Carolina coast. That's why the Charleston Beach Music and Shag Festival brings back so many good-time memories. Enjoy dance lessons, top live bands that include such well-known acts as the Fantastic Shakers and Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Daytime events are scheduled at the Citadel Alumni House and continue into the night with music and dancing at J.B. Pivot's. The event is scheduled yearly in the latter part of August or early September.
The Gibbes Museum of Art has worked hard to earn the respect of both critics and art lovers as it has consistently striven to present the work of some of the most influential artists in America that date as far back as the 16th century.. More significantly, they appropriately focus on some of South Carolina's most famous artists like Peale, Sully and West, whose works are prominently displayed in this impressive and well-designed facility.
The West Ashley Greenway Trail may be flat and easy, but it's 10-mile length is still a challenge, even for the most seasoned hikers. The recreation trail is 100 feet wide, is made up of mostly hard-packed dirt and runs through a residential and then commercial area. The trail parallels US 17 and moves past neighborhoods, parks and a marsh before reaching Johns Island and then a turn-around point.
