Formerly the Memphis Cotton Carnival, Carnival Memphis has been around since 1931. This annual celebration consists of a series of parties and festivals similar to Mardi Gras. During the month of June, the Carnival Memphis Association and its krewes select a King, Queen, and Royal Court to reign over the festivities, including parades and events celebrating local industries.
Little ones will adore the Children's Museum. Entertain young children for hours with 24 permanent exhibits and attractions that range from art to transportation. Children can climb "skyscrapers," generate tornados, observe the (literal) birds and bees in natural habitats and much, much more. Special events and programs are held regularly.
Stretch your legs at the Lichterman Nature Center. With over 65 acres of land filled with lakes, meadows and forests, the Lichterman Nature Center is a natural oasis in the urban landscape. The indoor and outdoor facilities feature wildlife, microscopic discoveries, a two-story forest boardwalk and an underwater viewing area.
Catch a Broadway play or a popular concert at the Orpheum Theatre. This elegant entertainment venue showcases some of the most famous local, national and international performers in Memphis. Watch a play or musical performance, or even a movie, at this Renaissance-style theater. Events and shows occur on an almost daily basis, so there is always something to see at the Orpheum.
