Formerly the Memphis Cotton Carnival, Carnival Memphis has been around since 1931. This annual celebration consists of a series of parties and festivals similar to Mardi Gras. During the month of June, the Carnival Memphis Association and its krewes select a King, Queen, and Royal Court to reign over the festivities, including parades and events celebrating local industries.

One of the original city squares, this plaza offers the shade of a pavilion, beautiful Greek statues and cooling fountains. Built around the former Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the National Civil Rights Museum memorializes the Civil Rights Movement and its iconic leaders. This premier heritage and cultural attraction chronicles the Civil Rights Movement from 1619 to 2000.
