Apple Will Build $1 Billion Campus in Austin, Adding 5,000 Jobs
12/13/2018 7:13am

Apple plans to build a 133-acre campus in Austin, Texas, that will cost $1 billion and employ 5,000 new workers, the company announced Thursday. The company says the move is expected to make it the largest private employer in Austin. Apple already employs more people in Austin, some 6,200 workers, than it does in any other city outside of its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The company now plans to add substantially to that figure. Its current main site in Austin is an office park roughly 12 miles north of downtown. The new campus will also be in North Austin, less than a mile from the current facilities. And it will have room to grow to 15,000 workers, the company says. Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin, CEO Tim Cook, said in a news release about the plan. The expansion comes six years after Apple signed a 10-year economic

The Bitter Boom-And-Bust Tale Of Colorado's Bet On Local Beer Hops
12/13/2018 7:02am

Back in 2010, there were high hopes in Colorado that locally grown hops, the plant that gives beer a bitter or citrusy flavor, would help feed the then-booming craft beer market. In just six years, the industry had sprouted from almost nothing to 200 acres, according to the trade association Hop Growers of America. Inside the chilled storage room at the 22nd largest craft brewery in the country Odell Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colo. brewer and agronomist Scott Dorsch pulls down a large box with the words whole leaf hops printed on the front. He rips open the silver packaging to reveal a mound of flattened, dried green hops, crisp and airy like dried leaves. Of the estimated $25,000 worth of hops in the room, none are from Colorado. Thats because a large company like Odell requires a more reliable source. Farmers in Washington have been growing hops for decades, sometimes over several generations. Dorsch knows the hops he buys from them have the consistent flavor he needs

Does More Federal Aid Raise Tuition Costs? Not For Most Students, Research Says
12/13/2018 5:00am

Im here to raise a warning flag with American students and American taxpayers, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said at a conference about federal student aid in Atlanta in November. We have a crisis in higher education. The cost of college has risen dramatically in recent decades, she told her audience. It has something to do with what one of my predecessors famously pointed out decades ago. When the federal government loans more taxpayer money, schools raise their rates. That predecessor, former Secretary of Education William Bennett, spelled out his idea in 1987. If anything, increases in financial aid in recent years have enabled colleges and universities blithely to raise their tuitions, confident that Federal loan subsidies would help cushion the increase, he wrote in The New York Times . It became the Bennett Hypothesis, and researchers have studied it extensively in recent years. Results and opinions are mixed but theres isnt definitive evidence that federal aid is
