U.K. Holds A Pivotal General Election, And Voters Bring Their Dogs To The Polls
12/12/2019 9:16am

U.K. voters are heading to the polls Thursday for a general election to select 650 members of Parliament and determine the futures of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. The election is expected to have high turnout, with key questions about Brexit left to resolve. Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. local time and were scheduled to close at 10 p.m. 5 p.m. ET. Thats when the first projections of the results will likely emerge. So far on election day, the most popular figures at polling stations seem to be dogs. While politicians stumped for a final push, many voters embraced the hashtag dogsatpollingstations on Twitter, celebrating the wide range of Labs, collies, retrievers, setters, spaniels and shepherds that got a bit of exercise as their humans exercised their right to vote. Johnson, London Mayor Sadiq Khan and other high-profile voters were photographed taking their dogs to the polls. Perhaps reflecting Britains divisive political sphere, an

Grammys Pledge More Diversity Under New Leadership
12/12/2019 9:07am

Two years ago, the Grammy Awards faced a moment of reckoning after its then-leader, Neil Portnow, said that women had to step up in order to be recognized in the music industry. Hes gone now. And the Recording Academy, the membership organization which gives out the Grammys, is trying to reinvent itself from top to bottom. Its under new, female leadership and with the Grammy ceremony coming up on Jan. 26, the Academy says it has concrete goals to ensure that women and people of color move toward equal footing. Last year, the Recording Academy formed a task force to address diversity and inclusion at the Grammys. On Thursday morning, the Academy announced that it will take up nearly all 17 of 18 of the task forces sweeping recommendations for reform. If enacted, these changes could transform the awards and, its architects hope, even act as a catalyst for shifts across the wider music industry. Deborah Dugan is the Recording Academys new CEO and president. She says, Weve

How The House Prescription Drug Plan Would Try To Lower Drug Prices
12/12/2019 8:49am

Practically everyone is frustrated by high prescription drug prices. Voters have made clear they want Congress to do something about them. The House of Representatives is voting Thursday on a bill that tries to deliver on that. Its highly unlikely to get through the Senate, and the White House has announced that President Trump would veto it if it came to his desk. But the bill, H.R. 3, titled the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act , does have several components that are reflected in other proposals in Congress, including a bipartisan bill in the Senate that might have better prospects. Obviously, Speaker Pelosis proposals are the most ambitious theyre also the furthest from becoming actual law, says Benedic Ippolito , an economist at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington. The bill lays out a vision for how Democrats would like to remake prescription drug pricing in this country, which could be seen as a promise to deliver on a bill

Before Sri Lanka's Easter Attacks, Muslims' Warnings About Terrorism Went Unheeded
12/12/2019 8:10am

On Dec. 26 last year, in a town surrounded by tea and rubber plantations in central Sri Lanka, residents discovered Buddhist statues had been vandalized on the side of the road. In the middle of the night, some saw young men speeding away on motorbikes after theyd shattered glass cases protecting the statues and hacked off the stone and marble Buddhas noses and hands. The town, Mawanella, is home to significant numbers of Muslims and Buddhists. Members of the town council worried the vandalism might signify a fraying of relations among the towns religious communities or perhaps just some mischief by local youths. So they asked Mohammad Taslim, a prominent Muslim council member, to investigate. Taslim soon heard startling rumors about two brothers, Sadiq and Shaheed Abdul-Haq. Fellow Muslims told him the men bore animosity toward Sri Lankas Buddhist majority and had become radicalized. Worst of all, they said, the brothers were rumored to be stockpiling weapons. Taslim immediately
