'Every Day Is A Good Day When You're Floating': Anne McClain Talks Life In Space
02/17/2019 12:34pm

What do you eat in space How do you sleep in space And just what does one do all day long in space Children from the Georgetown Day School in Washington D.C., recently had a chance to ask their most burning questions to NASA astronaut Anne McClain. They are roughly the same age that McClain was when on her first day of preschool she announced that she wanted to become an astronaut. By the time McClain was about 5 years old, she said she wrote a book about flying to space on the Soyuz vehicle. Now shes floating around on the International Space Station, showing that sometimes childhood dreams do come true. When you are finally in space and youre finally looking back at Earth and you realize for the first time in your life theres nothing standing between you and your dream, its just so hard to describe the profound impact of that, McClain, now 39, told NPRs Lulu Garcia-Navarro. Over the course of the interview, McClain flew a quarter of the way around the world. Every day she

More Than 300 Chemical Attacks Launched During Syrian Civil War, Study Says
02/17/2019 11:17am

Updated at 1:55 p.m. ET December 23, 2012. Bayada, Homs. July 29, 2014. Old City, Aleppo. July 4, 2018. Douma, outside Damascus. A study released Sunday tallies the chemical weapons attacks over the course of the Syrian civil war. At least 336 have occurred, according to authors Tobias Schneider and Theresa Ltkefend of the Berlin-based Global Public Policy Institute. Thats a number higher than previously known and we suspect that the real number may still be significantly higher, they write. The researchers poured over reports of chemical attacks going back to 2012, reviewing the available information on each to verify the details. They collected evidence from Syrian and international non-governmental organizations, monitoring groups, private firms, local administrative bodies, relevant international bodies, local and international media, and the open source. The reports authors attributed 2 percent of the chemical weapons attacks in Syria to the Islamic State. Syrian

An Italian Town Fell Silent So The Sounds Of A Stradivarius Could Be Preserved
02/17/2019 8:01am

Inside the concert hall of the Violin Museum in Cremona, Italy, Antonio de Lorenzi plays the prelude from Bachs Partita No. 3 on a Stradivarius violin. Cremona is the town where master luthier Antonio Stradivari crafted his storied instruments three centuries ago. But theres no guarantee that his instruments inimitable sound will survive for centuries more, says Fausto Cacciatori, the museums chief conservator. What will these instruments sound like in 200 years I hope they can still be played, he says. But you never know. All it takes is one unfortunate event. An earthquake, for instance. Think about what happened to so much art during World War II. Cacciatori says Stradivarius instruments need a 21st century failsafe and someone who understands music as well as technology to pull it off. Enter deejay Leonardo Tedeschi. We have played with Chemical Brothers, with a lot of big artists during our career, he muses. When hes not spinning records, Tedeschi runs Audiozone, a

'Not Letting It Define Us' — Walking The Runway With Metastatic Breast Cancer
02/17/2019 7:23am

On a cold, bright Sunday afternoon during New York Fashion Week, nearly six hundred people packed into an old building in Manhattans Lower East Side for an unusual lingerie show. The audience shouted exuberantly when the first model stepped onto the runway. Jaleh Panahi, of Kingston, New York, is a 73-year old practicing physician, mother and grandmother whos had metastatic breast cancer for eight years. Wearing a black head scarf, dangling earrings and a loose-fitting shoulder-to-toe outfit, she ambled gracefully, smiling and swiveling with her cane to Whitney Houstons Im Every Woman. Panahi was one of two dozen models at the event with metastatic or stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. They walked to express their feelings courage, zest for life, even anger about living with this illness. In this show we told the world that we have lost our breasts but didnt lose our femininity, Panahi said at the afterparty. This was the third annual

Their Home Survived The Camp Fire — But Their Insurance Did Not
02/17/2019 7:12am

Tom and Tamara Conry were dead set on returning to Paradise after the deadly Camp Fire destroyed the town last November. The couples home was barely touched by the fire, and most other survivors had a much steeper climb to recovery. But when their property insurer, American Reliable, notified them in December that it wasnt renewing the couples homeowners coverage, they realized that returning home would be even harder than expected. Getting that letter was like a slap in the face, Tamara Conry said. Right now, when its going to be the hardest time ever to get insurance at any kind of reasonable price, thats when you non-renew us Other families in Butte County could face a similar insurance dilemma. About 10 percent of buildings in Paradise are still standing after last Novembers wildfire, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Even though a new California law that took effect in January requires insurers to renew homeowners coverage on
