07/20/2018 3:02pm

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A couple in Texas delivered their baby in a Chick-Fil-A bathroom and now the baby will get free meals for life. KSAT reported that Falon Griffin was having contractions Tuesday night, so she and husband Robert drove to meet a family friend at a Chick-Fil-A to drop off their two children before going to the hospital. When they got to the restaurant parking lot, however, Falon knew she couldn’t wait, so she headed to the bathroom. […]

Spontaneously combusting tortilla chips in Austin blamed for two fires
07/20/2018 1:16pm

Normally, tortilla chips need a healthy topping of spicy salsa to be described as fiery. Not, as it turns out, in Austin, Texas. In a Wednesday Facebook post, fire officials described arriving at July 12 factory fire caused by the “spontaneous combustion of tortilla chips. Yes, you read that right.” The factory had apparently been testing a new way to handle food waste from the making of the chips that “didn’t work out so well.” According to officials, boxes of the food […]

Ancient sarcophagus yields horrible-smelling secret
07/20/2018 11:25am

Egyptian archaeologists have unsealed and opened a mysterious granite sarcophagus discovered on a construction site in Alexandria — only to find the remains of three mummies in a pool of leaked sewage water. Photos released Thursday evening by Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities show a team of archaeologists climbing down the 16-foot-deep (5 meter) pit and wedging the black sarcophagus open with a wooden plank. The experts had to wear masks over their mouths and noses to block the reportedly foul smell. An […]

Driver who dodged 1,645 tolls learns her fate
07/20/2018 11:23am

MOUNT JOY, Pa. – A woman who dodged tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike 1,645 times over a five-year period will end up paying more than $12,500 for those trips. Lori Yearick, 45, of Mount Joy, Penn., pleaded guilty, and her plea deal allows her to pay a lot less than she was originally said to owe: $92,000, thanks to the turnpike policy of charging toll dodgers the amount they would have owed had they traveled the highway’s entire length. Her […]

Britain's Big Butterfly Count Begins, With David Attenborough Leading The Charge
07/20/2018 3:05pm

The United Kingdom is counting its butterflies today — and will keep going for the next three weeks. The ninth annual Big Butterfly Campaign kicks off today, with a big boost from a legendary voice. "I did it in my garden," Sir David Attenborough intoned. "Where are you going to do yours?" The ask is simple: Anybody in the U.K. can download an app or print out a chart that shows pictures of common butterflies. Any time between now and Aug. 12, participants are invited to sit in a sunny spot for 15 minutes and keep their eyes open, marking every butterfly they see. Every brimstone and every common blue, every painted lady and each peacock. Last year, more than 60,000 people participated, counting more than half a million individual butterflies. Butterfly Conservation, the group that organizes the count, says that since the count began in 2010, the data recorded by citizens showed changes in the butterfly population that "match closely with those from much more intensive, transect-style

With an iPhone and the internet, this Syrian satirist is having conversations his countrymen can't
07/20/2018 1:48pm

Anger and fury led Jiim Siin to embrace political satire. “Every time I get into a conversation or any discussion about the situation in Syria, I get very angry,” he says.   Jiim Siin is a Syrian who’s emotionally battered by what’s happened to his country.  He practically spits with rage whenever he hears a pundit use words like “the situation” or “the crisis” to describe the civil war in Syria. To him, they sound like economic indicators instead of an ongoing tragedy that’s killed hundreds of thousands and forced millions to flee.  His sadness, confusion and anger started in late 2011, when Syria was between the hopeful peaceful protest phase of the uprising and the fully weaponized response by the Assad government. “I couldn’t stand the situation," Jiim Siin says. "I couldn’t stand my own anger and satire was the way to deal with it for me. Satire allows me to take a distance from what is happening and it allows me to shed light on things which may be very complex to write about.”
