'He Did Not Pray': Fallout Grows From Trump's Photo-Op At St. John's Church
06/02/2020 10:20am

President Trumps controversial foray to St. Johns Church on Monday is generating widespread criticism, after police and National Guard troops physically cleared out demonstrators and used tear gas to allow a photo opportunity outside the church. The bishop who oversees St. Johns is among the critics. He used violent means to ask to be escorted across the park into the courtyard of the church, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington tells NPRs Morning Edition . He held up his Bible after speaking an inflammatory militarized approach to the wounds of our nation. The bishop continued: He did not pray. He did not offer a word of balm or condolence to those who are grieving. He did not seek to unify the country, but rather he used our symbols and our sacred space as a way to reinforce a message that is antithetical to everything that the person of Jesus, whom we follow, and the gospel texts that we strive to emulate ... represent. Every president since

06/02/2020 8:41am

As protests demanding racial justice have multiplied since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody last week, the spirit of reckoning has also spread across America, including within the music industry. One initiative seeks to redress the historic inequities of the music business by declaring Tuesday to be a one-day moratorium on business as usual alternately knowns as TheShowMustBePaused, Blackout Tuesday and Black Out Tuesday as a means of identifying with protesters and considering how the music business can become more accountable to the black communities from which it profits. As the initiative gained traction over the weekend, especially on social media, companies and organizations including major record labels like Columbia, Interscope and Republic Records announced their participation. Just as quickly, some wondered what participation would mean, and many questioned whether the effort, embraced so quickly by huge corporations, would end up being an empty

Indian Teen Bikes 700 Miles With Injured Dad, Is Hailed As Hero — And Sparks Debate
06/02/2020 8:17am

When her father got hurt, a 15-year-old Indian girl used their last $20 to buy a rickety, hot pink bicycle, and pedaled him more than 700 miles to their home village across India in a heroic, life-saving ride while under coronavirus lockdown. The story of Jyoti Kumaris epic bike ride has made her a media celebrity, prompted praise from Ivanka Trump and launched a debate about whether the real story is the fact that the teenager felt she had no other way to get her father to safety. In January, Kumaris father, Mohan Paswan, a tuk-tuk driver, was injured in a traffic accident. He lives in Gurugram, a suburb of New Delhi, Indias capital, and works long hours ferrying passengers on his motorized rickshaw. Paswan sends money home to his wife and children in the eastern state of Bihar, more than 700 miles away. But after the accident, Paswan couldnt drive. He needed care. So Kumari hopped on a cross-country train and moved in with her father to nurse him back to health. Then the
