Established in the aftermath of the Mexican War and abandoned after World War II, Fort McIntosh served as a strategic guard for the Texas frontier. The fort is preserved as part of the Laredo Community College campus although the Laredo United States Army Reserve 340th Quarter Master Company continues to occupy the fort. It's definitely a sight to see for military history buffs.
Children will love learning about the Rio Grande ecosystem at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Environmental Science Center. Located on the campus of Laredo Community College, this environmental science center contains live specimens of local flora and fauna in a living laboratory. It's a great outdoor educational center for any family vacation.
Once the home of two Laredo merchant families in the early 20th century, the restored Italiante-style residence is now the Border Heritage Museum. This museum showcases the region's history, culture, industry and populations through a series of changing exhibits and educational seminars.
