Things To Do in Richmond, VA

Major James H. and Sallie May Dooley Major James H. and Sallie May Dooley

Maymont began as the 100-acre Victorian estate of Major James H. and Sallie May Dooley. The couple's mansion was complete in 1893 and over the next three decades they created lush garden scenery, picturesque landscapes and beautifully crafted outbuildings. Today, visitors can not only enjoy all of that natural allure, but there are such amenities as the Maymont House Museum, historic gardens, a carriage collection, nature center, wildlife exhibits and a children's farm to enjoy, as well. Still, there are several choice spots to enjoy an outdoor picnic on this inviting piece of historic land.

The Richmond Folk Festival The Richmond Folk Festival

Richmond's 2nd Street Festival is held every October. Like many of the historical places and events that are associated with the city, this festival links the historical past to the prosperous present in the city's notable African American district where the event is held. Enjoy great soul food, live jazz and a festival that echoes back to the celebrations held back in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. It's an excellent party you won't want to miss.

American Civil War Museum American Civil War Museum

The Civil War still echoes in Richmond, and you can glimpse one of the most turbulent times in American history by visiting the Museum and White House of the Confederacy. You'll see an astounding collection of artifacts that include artwork, letters, and other interesting items that date back to the Civil War. Some of the highlights at this attraction include Stonewall Jackson's weaponry and Robert E. Lee's "Appomattox" sword.
