When you tour the Berkeley Plantation, you'll be among a couple of history's most significant connections. One is that the plantation house is said to be the site of the Thanksgiving celebration of 1619, although debate still exists over the exact location of the original event. The gorgeous Georgian manor is also the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Also, our ninth President, William Henry Harrison, was born here as well. The Civil War still echoes in Richmond, and you can glimpse one of the most turbulent times in American history by visiting the Museum and White House of the Confederacy. You'll see an astounding collection of artifacts that include artwork, letters, and other interesting items that date back to the Civil War. Some of the highlights at this attraction include Stonewall Jackson's weaponry and Robert E. Lee's "Appomattox" sword. The White House of the Confederacy has been meticulously restored to reflect what it looked like when Confederate President Jefferson Davis lived here. The museum opened in 1968, and since then the staff has prided itself on consistently acquiring some of the world's most recognized works by some of the world's best known artists. To balance that goal, the museum also presents work from students that proves to be just as thought provoking.
