04/04/2020 5:57pm

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Saturday that the state had significantly reduced a testing backlog even as he announced new collaborations to improve coronavirus testing capacity and infrastructure. More than 126,000 Californians have been tested for the coronavirus, with 12,026 testing positive. The number of people awaiting results has been cut from nearly 60,000 to 13,000, Newsom said. Newsom announced a new state partnership with UC Davis and UC San Diego that would create several hubs throughout the state to help increase testing capacity. Abbott, the medical device giant that makes a coronavirus test, committed to opening 75 testing sites in the state, Newsom said. At least 281 people have died of COVID-19 in California. Newsom said there were 2,300 hospitalized in the state system with 1

Iconoclastic L.A. composer Brendan Eder has a new album slated for the end of this month, including this particularly charismatic song first inspired by a drum hook on an Antonio Carlos Jobim album. With what became an agile Avalanches / DJ Shadow-style beat underneath, Eders The Spirit Of bloomed into a pocket symphonyall butterflies, spring flowers and pastoral sunrises as Eder leads his woodwinds through ecstatic aerial acrobatics. Van Dyke Parks would definitely get it.

If Gemma Castros new song Free had a video, itd be a fragment from an oversaturated Kenneth Anger clip that catches fire in the middlethe kind of thing where image turns into light and then smoke. See here for vivid demonstration of an arguably Anger-ian aesthetic. But as a song, that smoke and light is all still there, along with that Cat Power / Mazzy Star / Sibylle Baier sense of isolation and desperation that pulls you closer even as it sounds like its coming from farther and farther away.

L.A.s Tropa Magica are David and Rene Pacheco, two brothers who took like twenty different kinds of music and turned it into one thing all their own. Like this slo-mo fever dream rodeo video for 2018s LSD Romaa classic in a micro-genre it invented. Theyve called it psychedelic norteo and other people call it cumbia-punkor was that punk-cumbiabut theres space and distance enough there for inspirations from a long list of genres and generations. For one instance: David and Erwin Flores from Los Saicos mustve taken singing lessons from the same broken-glass-gargling genius.

Los Robles is named for the Pasadena intersection where Moniquea grew up, and this seamlessly supersonic mix shes made for us is its own journey from back then to right now. Its all vinyl, of course, and including plenty of her contemporaries across the robust and vital modern funk sceneproducers and vocalists both, from labels like Bastard Jazz and Star Creature.

03/30/2020 3:14pm

Its not exactly the title youd want for a song coming out right now, but L.A.s Good Talk made this Fever well before the romance in that metaphor was shredded by reality, and even in quarantine times theyre still going to put it out. I swear we wrote it many months ago, says synth player Ryan Koch. Weird timing.
