The Latest Target In China's Crackdown On Entrepreneurs Is An Outspoken Billionaire
05/15/2021 5:01am

BAODING, HEBEI, CHINA Billionaire Sun Dawu built an agriculture empire just outside Beijing. To accommodate approximately 9,000 employees and their families, he created a self-contained company town replete with free hospitals, schools and a sports stadium, all named after himself. Now his conglomerate, the Dawu Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Group, is slipping out of his control, as he faces trial next week over what appear to be politically motivated charges. In late April, local authorities arrested Sun and 20 employees many of them his own family members after a minor property dispute turned violent. They already had been in detention for half a year over a common administrative issue, for which Sun now faces eight criminal charges, including illegal mining and seeking quarrels and provoking trouble. He denies them all. Over the years, the 67-year-old farmer turned tycoon has defiantly befriended and supported Chinese political dissidents. Now he may become one himself.

China Lands On Mars In Major Advance For Its Apace Ambitions
05/15/2021 4:36am

China landed a spacecraft on Mars for the first time on Saturday, a technically challenging feat more difficult than a moon landing, in the latest step forward for its ambitious goals in space. Plans call for a rover to stay in the lander for a few days of diagnostic tests before rolling down a ramp to explore an area of Mars known as Utopia Planitia. It will join an American rover that arrived at the red planet in February. Chinas first Mars landing follows its launch last month of the main section of what will be a permanent space station and a mission that brought back rocks from the moon late last year. China has left a footprint on Mars for the first time, an important step for our countrys space exploration, the official Xinhua News Agency said in announcing the landing on one of its social media accounts. The U.S. has had nine successful landings on Mars since 1976. The Soviet Union landed on the planet in 1971, but the mission failed after the craft stopped transmitting

What The New Mask Guidance Means For Unvaccinated Kids — And Their Parents
05/14/2021 5:54pm

When the CDC announced on Thursday that fully vaccinated people can safely take off their masks in most settings, one group that did not necessarily breathe a sigh of relief was the parents of young children. Some noted that the CDCs new guidance does not have any specific advice for vaccinated parents with unvaccinated kids in their households. So we dug into the current guidance for kids and parents, and talked with infection prevention expert Dr. Emily Landon about the risks and how her family is handling this complicated limbo. What are the COVID-19 risks for kids While children and adolescents who get infected by the coronavirus tend to have less severe cases of COVID-19, they can get sick and they can spread the virus to others . And some children have developed serious complications from the disease, including a rare but serious medical condition associated with COVID-19 called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children MIS-C. There are also increasing concerns about

Judge Puts Hold On Ruling That Would Have Ended Ban On Evictions
05/14/2021 5:34pm

A federal judge recently moved to end a nationwide eviction moratorium put into place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because of the coronavirus outbreak. But Friday, with nearly 7 million households still behind on rent, the same judge has put a hold on her order. On May 5 , U.S. District Judge Dabney L. Friedrich sided with the Alabama Association of Realtors, which argued the CDC doesnt have the authority to prevent landlords from evicting tenants during a pandemic. However, Friedrich is giving the Justice Department time to appeal, and is holding the ban in place in the meantime. In her stay of the original ruling, she said if the CDCs data-driven moratorium is lifted, as many as 433,000 cases of COVID-19 and thousands of deaths could be attributed to the lifting of the state-based eviction. Friedrich acknowledged that landlords continue to struggle with unpaid rent, but said the magnitude of these additional financial losses is outweighed by the departments

Confused By CDC's Latest Mask Guidance? Here's What We've Learned
05/14/2021 5:24pm

If youre fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as in, youve gotten all your shots and waited two weeks the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday you can mostly go ahead and stop wearing your mask and stop social distancing inside and out. Fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance, the CDC now says . There are some important exceptions well get into below. The shift in guidance was a dramatic reversal from the countrys top public health agency, which has been criticized for being too conservative and convoluted in its earlier guidelines for those who are vaccinated . The latest changes have left a lot of people with a lot of questions, which NPRs science, health and education reporters are here to answer. Was this shift in the guidelines a surprise

VIDEO PREMIERE: Gemma Castro “Quiero Saber De Ti”
10/23/2020 1:31pm

Everything in Gemma Castros new Quiero Saber de Tithe idea, the lyrics, the music, the production and the videowas made as a counterattack against confinement both physical and psychic as she quarantined in her abuelas strict Catholic house in Guadalajara. Shes always created her own space, and in some ways quarantine just gave her more possibilities to work with. Slight warning: if you still have a job to go to and that job even more hideously oppressive and uptight than most jobs, you may want to save this for later.

TRACK PREMIERE: Mohama Saz “Quemar las Naves”
10/23/2020 1:19pm

This smoldering new track from Spains Mohama Sazout Dec. 11 on L.A.s iconoclastic Mock labelis a slow-motion spin through several waves of psychedelia and the musical heritage of at several subcontinental cultural regions. Described to us as Mediterranean Psychedelia, Quemar Las Naves is swimming in the east-meets-west-meets-analog-high-tech sound familiar to fans of Sublime Frequencies, Finders Keepers and those awesome-but-legally-iffy comps of rare 45s from Turkey, Lebanon, Africa and beyond. Theres a particular mindscape where an endless desert meets a bottomless sea, and where the music is all about negative space and hypnotic rhythm, and thats where Quemar Las Naves walks the tideline at sunset.

Exotica is a bizarre and sometimes uncomfortably ... complicated genre-slash-phenomenon, but the sensation of being somewhere else is more than welcome right now, and nobody makes a living room seem like a distant lagoon more than L.A.s Healing Gems. They make songs that sound like Moon Gas meets Ennio Morricone with happily saturated production dripping with cinematic effects and unpredictable instrumentation, often soundtracking deadpan lyrics about ancient curses, legendary ruins and dreams so real they override waking life.

You already know Ten-Headed Skeleton even if you dont think you know Ten-Headed Skeletonthats the recent alias-slash-identity-reinvention of L.A.s Michael Nhat, the ferociously independent outsider artist/rapper/producer/and probably more, with recent musical output including the Suffocate On Honey 7 and his earlier full-length Evil Doing.
