The San Bernardino National Forest is like an unexpected natural haven in the midst of some intense urban activity. Most people are pleasantly surprised to find this natural gem of a forest located on the other side of the mountains in San Bernardino. In addition to some breathtaking topography that features peaks of over 10,000 feet, the forest is home to some amazing landscapes that include natural attractions like rugged peaks, calming mountain lakes, and picture-perfect valley views.

The Big Bear Solar Observatory proves to be as mighty and impressive as its name. This facility was originally built back in 1965 by the California Institute of Technology and is now maintained by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. It has the distinction of being one of only six solar observatories in the world, plus the added attraction of being located on an island in the center of a lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. The location proves to be ideal for looking heavenward as there is minimal pollution, the skies are typically clear, and the airflow is smooth, making for great views that are nothing less than stunning.

The Mission Inn Museum invites you to get your hands on history when you take one of their memorable and educational tours. The Mission Inn was formed in 1976 to preserve this noteworthy National Historic Landmark. This 75-minute walking tour is led by a highly knowledgeable guide well versed in the art, architecture and history of the Mission Inn. This tour offers you a chance to see areas of the mission that are not readily accessible to the general public. Access is based on availability and reservations are strongly recommended.

It doesn't matter if you are a highly experienced rock climber or you just enjoy taking in the rustic scenery that all of the incredible formations offer, you will really enjoy visiting the Arrowhead Pinnacles. This outdoor area features many walking, hiking and climbing routes amid some heavily rocky terrain. The area is quite similar to the famous Joshua Tree site and there are many crack and face routes to choose from. Heading up the pinnacle takes about an hour.
