The majestic and breathtaking presence of the San Bernardino Mountains is hard to ignore. Fans of fishing will love casting their lines here, as the lake waters are full of trout, large-mouth bass, and bluegill. The Big Bear Solar Observatory proves to be as mighty and impressive as its name. This facility was originally built back in 1965 by the California Institute of Technology and is now maintained by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. It has the distinction of being one of only six solar observatories in the world, plus the added attraction of being located on an island in the center of a lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. The location proves to be ideal for looking heavenward as there is minimal pollution, the skies are typically clear, and the airflow is smooth, making for great views that are nothing less than stunning.

Quite often, you get that feeling that you need to “get out” for a bit to clear your head and get some fresh air. San Bernardino offers plenty of excellent outdoor destinations to do just that, and one of the most picturesque is Littlefield/Shultis Park. This inviting area features plenty of lush greenery that adorns its impressive 15 acres. The park also features 15 park benches, 2 playground areas, a 35-mile walking track and 2 picnic areas. So if you want to make a whole day of it or just want a natural setting during your lunch break, the Littlefield/Shultis Park is the perfect destination!

The fun and down-home charm of a county fair is alive and well thanks to the San Bernardino County Fair that runs from late July to early August. This family-fun event features everything from prize pigs to excellent live music, games, and lots of other great activities.
