The San Bernardino National Forest is like an unexpected natural haven in the midst of some intense urban activity. The Big Bear Solar Observatory proves to be as mighty and impressive as its name. This facility was originally built back in 1965 by the California Institute of Technology and is now maintained by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. It has the distinction of being one of only six solar observatories in the world, plus the added attraction of being located on an island in the center of a lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. The location proves to be ideal for looking heavenward as there is minimal pollution, the skies are typically clear, and the airflow is smooth, making for great views that are nothing less than stunning.

Get a taste of what life was like for the Franciscan Fathers back in 1819 when you visit the Asistencia Mission De San Gabriel. The site is commonly referred to as “Estancia,” as this Spanish mission was a beacon of hope and help to people of the area who were in need of food, water and spiritual comfort. This historic structure is now owned by the San Bernardino County Museum System and its continuous efforts allow visitors to take a fascinating look at what religious life was like alongside the San Bernardino Mountains in the 19th century. The mission has aged well, as many couples choose to get married in the meticulously maintained church that is complemented by its impressively landscaped grounds.

The Riverside Art Museum is a fertile ground for creativity. In addition to presenting an impressive series of noteworthy exhibits, the museum takes great pride in both art appreciation and its creation. Various classes and events are regularly on the museum's busy schedule, as are events like art walks, openings and specially themed collections that keep art fans coming back for more.
