The Big Bear Solar Observatory proves to be as mighty and impressive as its name. This facility was originally built back in 1965 by the California Institute of Technology and is now maintained by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. It has the distinction of being one of only six solar observatories in the world, plus the added attraction of being located on an island in the center of a lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. The Mission Inn was formed in 1976 to preserve this noteworthy National Historic Landmark. This 75-minute walking tour is led by a highly knowledgeable guide well versed in the art, architecture and history of the Mission Inn. This tour offers you a chance to see areas of the mission that are not readily accessible to the general public. Access is based on availability and reservations are strongly recommended.
