China Attacks Potential US Diplomatic Boycott of Olympics
12/06/2021 2:55am

China on Monday threatened to take firm countermeasures if the U.S. proceeds with a diplomatic boycott of Februarys Beijing Winter Olympics. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian accused U.S. politicians of grandstanding over the issue of not sending dignitaries to attend the events that China hopes will showcase its economic development and technological prowess. Speaking to reporters at a daily briefing, Zhao said such a move would be an outright political provocation, but gave no details on how China would retaliate. U.S. President Joe Biden has said he is considering a boycott, under which American athletes would still compete, and an announcement is expected this week. Supporters of such a step cite Chinas poor record on human rights as justification, saying China is using the games to whitewash its ill treatment of civil rights activists, political dissidents and ethnic minorities. Without being invited, American politicians keep hyping the so-called diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympic, which is purely wishful thinking and grandstanding, Zhao told reporters at a daily briefing. If the U.S. side is bent on going its own way, China will take firm countermeasures, Zhao said. The dispatching of high-level delegations to each Olympics has long been a tradition among the U.S. and other leading nations then-president George W. Bush attended the opening of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. First lady Jill Biden led the American contingent to the Tokyo Olympic this year and second gentleman Doug Emhoff led a delegation to the Paralympic Games. The possibility of a diplomatic boycott comes as the U.S. attempts to stabilize turbulent relations with Beijing, even as it maintains a tough approach toward trade frictions and conflicts over Chinas actions on Taiwan, human rights, Hong Kong and the South China Sea. Beijing has mounted a stiff response to all U.S. criticisms, denouncing them as interference in its internal affairs and slapping visa bans on American politicians it regards as anti-China. It wasnt clear who the U.S. might have sent to Beijing for the games and Zhaos comments appeared to indicate that China has not extended any invitations. Australia, whose ties with China have nosedived over a range of disputes, has also raised the possibility of a diplomatic boycott.

US Expected to Announce Diplomatic Boycott of Winter Olympics in Beijing
12/05/2021 7:39pm

The Biden administration is expected to announce a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing this week, a senior administration official told NBC News late Sunday.A diplomatic boycott would mean that no U.S. government officials would attend the games, but U.S. athletes would still be allowed to compete.A full boycott was not anticipated.CNN first reported the news of the expected announcement.Read the full story at NBCNews.com

Former Dodgers' Great Gil Hodges Gets Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame
12/05/2021 6:18pm

Buck ONeil, a champion of Black ballplayers during a monumental, eight-decade career on and off the field, joined Gil Hodges, Minnie Mioso and three others in being elected to the baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday.Former Minnesota Twins teammates Tony Oliva and Jim Kaat also were chosen along with Bud Fowler by a pair of veterans committees.Oliva and Kaat, both 83 years old, are the only living new members. Longtime slugger Dick Allen, who died last December, fell one vote shy of election. The six newcomers will be enshrined in Cooperstown, New York, on July 24, 2022, along with any new members elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America. First-time candidates David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez join Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling on the ballot, with voting results on Jan. 25.Passed over in previous Hall elections, the new members reflect a diversity of accomplishments. This was the first time ONeil, Mioso and Fowler had a chance to make the Hall under new rules honoring Negro League contributions. Last December, the statistics of some 3,400 players were added to Major League Baseballs record books when MLB said it was correcting a longtime oversight in the games history and reclassifying the Negro Leagues as a major league.Jubilation, said Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, that ONeil helped create, after the voting results were announced.ONeil was a two-time All-Star first baseman in the Negro Leagues and the first Black coach in the National or American leagues. He became a remarkable ambassador for the sport until his death in 2006 at 94 and already is honored with a life-sized statue inside the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. For all ONeil did for the game his entire life, many casual fans werent entirely familiar with him until they watched the nine-part Ken Burns documentary Baseball, which first aired on PBS in 1994.There, ONeils grace, wit and vivid storytelling brought back to life the times of Negro Leagues stars Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell, plus the days of many more Black ballplayers whose names were long forgotten.Kendrick said it was too bad ONeil wont be in Cooperstown for the induction ceremonies next July 22, but you know his spirit is going to fill the valley, he said on MLB Network.Mioso was a two-time All-Star in the Negro Leagues before becoming the first Black player for the Chicago White Sox in 1951. Born in Havana, The Cuban Comet was seven-time All-Star while with the White Sox and Indians. There was nothing mini about Saturnino Orestes Armas Mioso on the field. He hit over .300 eight times with Cleveland and Chicago, led the AL in stolen bases three times, reached double digits in home runs most every season and won three Gold Gloves in left field.Mioso finished up, or so it seemed, in 1964. He came back at age 50 for the White Sox in 1976 going 1 for 8 and batted twice in 1980, giving him five decades of playing pro ball. The White Sox retired his No. 9 in 1983 and he remained close to the organization and its players before his death in 2015.Fowler, born in 1858, is often regarded as the first Black professional baseball player. The pitcher and second baseman helped create the popular Page Fence Giants barnstorming team.Hodges became the latest Brooklyn Dodgers star from The Boys of Summer to reach the Hall, joinng Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella and Pee Wee Reese. An eight-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glover at first base, Hodges enhanced his legacy when he managed the 1969 Miracle Mets to the World Series championship, a startling five-game win over heavily favored Baltimore.Hodges was still the Mets manager when he suffered a heart attack during spring training in 1972 and died at 47.Oliva was a three-time AL batting champion with the Twins whose career was cut short by knee problems. Kaat was 283-237 in 25 seasons and a 16-time Gold Glove winner.ONeil and Fowler were selected by the Early Days committee. Hodges, Mioso, Oliva and Kaat were chosen the by the Golden Days committees. The 16-member panels met separately in Orlando, Florida. The election announcement was originally scheduled to coincide with the big league winter meetings, which were nixed because of the MLB lockout. It took 12 votes 75 for selection: Mioso drew 14, ONeil got 13 and Hodges, Oliva, Kaat and Fowler each had 12. Allen had 11.ONeil played 10 years in the Negro Leagues and helped the Kansas City Monarchs win championships as a player and manager. His numbers were hardly gaudy a .258 career batting average, nine home runs. But what John Jordan ONeil Jr. meant to baseball can never be measured by numbers alone.ONeil became the first Black coach in American League or National League history with the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed a prolific career as a scout. His impact is visible to this day.Along with his statue in Cooperstown, the Halls board of directors periodically present the Buck ONeil Lifetime Achievement Award to a person whose whose extraordinary efforts enhanced baseballs positive impact on society and whose character, integrity and dignity mirror those shown by ONeil. In 2006, it appeared ONeil would get to soak in the praise earned for his work when the Special Committee on Negro Leagues convened to study candidates for the Hall of Fame. The panel indeed elected 17 new members but ONeil was not among them, narrowly missing out.ONeil was chosen to speak on behalf of those 17 newcomers, all deceased, on induction day at Cooperstown. True to his nature, he didnt emit a single word of remorse and regret about his own fate of being left out.Two months later, ONeil died in Kansas City.

LA Rams Snap 3-Game Losing Skid, Roll Over Jaguars 37-7
12/05/2021 4:22pm

The Jacksonville Jaguars were the cure for just about everything that ailed the Los Angeles Rams throughout November.Matthew Stafford and the Rams hope they can stay up at this level when their stretch run gets a whole lot tougher.Cooper Kupp,Van JeffersonandOdell Beckham Jr.caught touchdown passes from Stafford, and the Rams snapped their three-game losing streak with a 37-7 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday.Stafford passed for 295 yards whileSony Michel rushed for 121 yardsand a score for the Rams 8-4, who rebounded from a winless month with a solid all-around effort against a struggling opponent. Kupp had his 100th reception of a remarkable season among his eight catches for 129 yards. Its nice to get a win after three subpar performances, Stafford said.Stafford snapped back into his early-season form, playing turnover-free football after giving the ball away six times during the three-game skid that threatened to derail the Rams playoff plans. Los Angeles still has never lost four straight in coach Sean McVays half-decade in charge. We really need to find a way to start playing our best ball in December, McVay said. Our guys did a great job just staying steady and trusting the process. You dont take any wins for granted in this league. This is good for our team, and now weve just got to start stacking blocks.Jalen Ramsey made three tackles against his former teamand recovered a fumbleforced by Aaron Donald on the opening drive for the Rams, who comfortably won what appeared to be the least daunting game remaining on a tough schedule. Los Angeles still must make trips to Arizona, Baltimore and Minnesota along with two NFC West games at home. When you get turnovers, you tend to win games, Donald said. We need to build off this type of win we had today. We cant be satisfied. Got to stay hungry.Rookie Trevor Lawrence passed for 145 yards for the Jaguars 2-10, who have lost four straight. With their 16th consecutive loss to NFC teams since September 2018, the Jaguars have lost 10 games for the 10th time in the last 11 years. There are some times when youre at a loss for words, especially in a game like this where we were moving the ball earlier and then cant get anything going, said Lawrence, who went 16 for 28. The turnovers hurt, and when youre not moving the ball consistently it is pretty much impossible to come back.Jacksonvilleturned the ball overtwice and struggled to get anything going offensively against LAs star-studded defense, managing just 197 total yards. This defeat means Urban Meyer will lose at least twice as many games in his rookie NFL season as he ever did in any of his 17 seasons as a head coach at the college level.I dont mean to be redundant and go into coachspeak, but theres nothing else I can tell you, Meyer said. Is it frustrating for everybody involved Absolutely. Are we better than that Absolutely. We have better players and coaches than that. So now its time to go produce.Michel was the Rams featured back with Darrell Henderson in uniform but limited by a thigh injury. Michel capped the Rams only TD drive of the first half with a 5-yard run before finishing with the Rams first 100-yard rushing performance all season.Jacksonvilles defense hung in throughout the first half, preventing the Rams from converting any of their six third downs and forcing LAs Matt Gay to kick three field goals. Were playing excellent pass defense, field position and complementary football there, Meyer said. Thats kind of where you want to be on the road against a good team, and then we couldnt move the ball. The Rams defense dominated Lawrences offense in the first half except for one 73-yard scoring drive culminating in Carlos Hydes 1-yard TD run.The Rams took control after halftime with two long touchdown drives capped by Kupps 29-yard TD grab and Jeffersons 2-yard, toe-tap scoring catch.STARRY DEBUTSThe Rams two prized midseason acquisitions finally got to play at SoFi Stadium for the first time, and both made contributions to the victory.Beckham made an early 27-yard reception before his 1-yard TD grab early in the fourth quarter, outfighting Nevin Lawson for a jump ball.Linebacker Von Miller had just one tackle for loss, but he was active in drawing blockers while the Rams pass rush kept Lawrence uncomfortable for most of the day.INJUREDStafford left for one play after a hard tackle, but returned quickly. Just a chest shot, Stafford said. I feel good now. Rams center Brian Allen injured his knee on their first snap from scrimmage and didnt return. Coleman Shelton took over and played well in the Los Angeles natives first significant NFL action in two years. Rams left guard David Edwards injured his foot later in their opening drive, but eventually returned. Jaguars C Brandon Linder injured his back. Jags rookie CB Tyson Campbell incurred an abdominal injury in the third quarter.UP NEXTJaguars: at Tennessee next Sunday.Rams: at Arizona for Monday night game on Dec. 13.

Who's Scored the Most Touchdowns in NFL History?
12/05/2021 3:44pm

Whos scored the most touchdowns in NFL history originally appeared on NBC Sports WashingtonAdrian Peterson made history in his Seattle Seahawks debut on Sunday. The 36-year-old running back, who signed with Seattle earlier in the week, scored a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter of Seattles 30-23 Week 13 victory over theSan Francisco 49ers. The score gave Peterson 126 career touchdowns, tying him with Jim Brown for 10th all time.It was also the 120th rushing touchdown of Petersons career, putting him three behind Marcus Allen for third all time in that category. And the veteran back became the first player to ever score a rushing touchdown with six different teams.Peterson was cut by the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago following a three-game stint where he rushed 27 times for 82 yards and one TD. But, after being picked up by the Seahawks, AP will have a chance to continue to move up the NFLs all-time touchdowns list.So just how high could Peterson climb down the stretch of the 2021 seasonWhos scored the most touchdowns in NFL historyNot only does Jerry Rice have the most receiving yards and touchdowns of all time, but he also owns the record for the most touchdowns scored. Rice tallied 208 touchdowns over his 20-year career, with 197 of them being receiving scores. The closest player to Rice on the all-time touchdowns list is Emmitt Smith. The NFLs all-time rushing leader, Smith ran for a record 164 touchdowns and hauled in another 11 for 175 total in his 15-year career.Running backLaDainian Tomlinson sits in third behind Smith with 162 scores 145 rushing, 17 receiving. Randy Moss 157 TDs, Terrell Owens 156, Marcus Allen 145, Marshall Faulk 136 and Cris Carter 131 round out the top eight. The only player Peterson could probably catch, and surpass, this season is Marvin Harrison in ninth. Harrison has 128 career touchdowns, meaning Peterson would only need three scores over Seattles final five games to overtake the No. 9 spot. He would have to average one touchdown per game to tie Cris Carter in eighth place.Heres a look at the top-25 touchdown scorers of all time, all of whom reached the 100-TD mark:1. Jerry Rice: 2082. Emmitt Smith: 1753. LaDainian Tomlinson: 1624. Randy Moss: 1575. Terrell Owens: 1566. Marcus Allen: 1457. Marshall Faulk: 1368. Cris Carter: 1319. Marvin Harrison: 128T-10. Jim Brown: 126T-10.
