The Los Angeles Chargers selected safety Derwin James from Florida State with the No. 17 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. James was widely considered a top 10 talent and was easily the best available player on the board when he fell into the Chargers lap at No. 17. At 6'2", 215 pounds, James is an athletic freak with an enormous wing span, breackneck speed and incredible leaping ability. General Manager Tom Telesco earlier in the week assigned scouts and coaches to study the teams roster to see what holes needed to be filled in this years draft. “We’ll go through different scenarios of where guys would go and what we would do because draft day, you can’t have those discussions. It’s hard enough making decisions with the clock ticking down in front of you,” Telesco said. “You can’t have those long discussions at this point. You have to have that decided. There will be certain trigger points in a round depending on who is there where we might start talking about trading up or trading back or stand pat.”James was also eyed heavily by defensive coordinator Gus Bradley throughout the process. He could be used in a number of capacities to attack offenses in the league. He's extremely versatile, athletic, that provides a significant boost to that secondary. As a true safety his athleticism will shine. Bradley could also put him down into the box and his size will prove him worthy. Despite his left knee meniscus and wound up playing in only two games in 2016 season. While at Florida State, he had 186 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks in just 26 games. The Bolts got a steal with James who literally fell in their laps, as he was projected to be a top 10 pick. In James, not only do the Chargers get a leader, but a disciplined player in the film room and displays the ability to learn quickly. The "Chosen One" is headed to the desert.Former UCLA quarterback Josh "Chosen" Rosen was drafted at No. 10 by the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday during the 2018 NFL Draft. The Cardinals originally were slated to select at No. 15 overall, but they traded a third round and a fifth round pick to the Oakland Raiders in order to trade up and draft the former Bruin. Rosen became the fourth quarterback taken in the NFL Draft after Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield was taken No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Browns, USC Trojans QB Sam Darnold was taken No. 3 by the New York Jets, and Wyoming's Josh Allen was selected No. 7 overall by the Buffalo Bills. It was the first time in NFL history in the common draft era that four quarterbacks were selected in the top 10 overall picks.NFL Network's Mike Maycock correctly predicted in his mock draft that the Cardinals would trade up to get Rosen and believes that Rosen is the most NFL ready quarterback in the entire draft. "He's the most ready to play quarterback in this draft," Maycock said. "Beautiful, natural thrower. The only thing is he needs to understand when the play is over. At the end of the day, he's a difference maker. He can wake up at 4AM and go out and rip an 18-yard comeback. When he has clear feet and clear vision, nobody does it any better."Rosen rewrote the record books in his three years in Westwood as he broke the single-season passing yards record (3,756), throwing for a total of 9,340 yards with 59 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. Former USC quarterback Carson Palmer retired after the 2017 season and the Cardinals signed free agent quarterbacks Mike Glennon and Sam Bradford in the offseason. Despite Rosen being NFL ready, he might have to wait behind both quarterbacks on the depth chart in 2018.No word yet on if Rosen will get a hot tub when he moves to Phoenix. With the #10 overall pick in the 2018 #NFLDraft, the @AZCardinals select #JoshRosen (@josh3rosen)!📺: NFLN/FOX/ESPN pic.twitter.com/6AnSKpMBpD— NFL (@NFL) April 27, 2018 Congratulations to @josh3rosen on his selection to the @AZCardinals!The first member of the 2018 UCLA Football Draft Class, presented by 3 Day Blinds.#GoBruins #NFLDraft pic.twitter.com/rZP56Tg9MI— UCLA Football (@UCLAFootball) April 27, 2018List of NFL Draft Picks for 2018 (so far):Browns - Baker Mayfield, quarterback from OklahomaGiants - Saquon Barkley, running back from Penn StateJets - Sam Darnold, quarterback from USCBrowns - Denzel Ward, cornerback from Ohio StateBroncos – Bradley Chubb from North Carolina StateColts – Quenton Nelson from Notre DameBills (via trade) – Josh Allen – from WyomingBears – Roquan Smith from Georgia.49ers – Mike McGlinchey from Notre DameCardinals (via trade) – Josh Rosen from UCLADolphins – Minkah Fitzpatrick from AlabamaBucs (via trade) – Vita Vea from WashingtonRedskins - Da'Ron Payne from Alabamamore to come...Photo Credit: Getty Images
USC's quarterback Sam Darnold was tapped for the New York Jets as No. 3 pick for the NFL Draft Thursday. The overall pick for the Cleveland Browns was quarterback Baker Mayfield. Darnold is the highest drafted USC player since Reggie Bush in 2006, USC tweeted after the announcement left Trojan fans rejoicing. The Giants picked second Thursday night after the Cleveland Browns, snatching up Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. Analyst and former NFL general manager Phil Savage says the Giants were in the "catbird seat" and can go in many directions, but he encouraged them to consider Barkley. Looks like they heeded that advice. Southern California was still eagerly awaiting to see where UCLA's Josh Rosen would be drafted. The Cleveland Browns ended weeks of speculation by selecting Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield with the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-1 senior is the fourth quarterback the Browns have selected in the first round since 2007, and the first quarterback the team has taken first overall since Kentucky's Tim Couch in 1999. "With Baker Mayfield, we have a guy who loves the game of football, who is an ultra-competitor, is revered by his teammates and anybody who has ever been around him," Browns GM John Dorsey said. "He's a guy that has earned everything he has ever had since high school to college and now up here. He is a winner, he's competitive."According to NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein, Mayfield has the ability to extend plays and throw with accuracy, giving him a good shot at being a sucessful NFL player. Mayfield did not attend the draft, but in a tweet said: "Let’s go to work!!"Later he tweeted:"Can’t wait to run out of that tunnel!" At Oklahoma, Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award. He led the Sooners to the Big 12 Championship and helped them secure a spot in the 2017 College Football Playoff.Mayfield completed 285-of-404 of his passes and threw for 43 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He also rushed for 311 yards and five scores. The Austin, Texas, native was considered to be a top selection by draft experts and late buzz about the Browns selecting him surfaced Thursday morning around the league.Ultimately, the Browns and Dorsey showed faith in the confident and distinguished Mayfield, whowill compete with veteran QB Tyrod Taylor in Cleveland. At this year's NFL combine, Mayfield said he's the man for the Browns."I think if anybody's going to turn that franchise around it would be me," he said. "They're close. They're very close. They have the right pieces. I think they just need one guy, a quarterback to make that difference."This article contains material from the Associated PressPhoto Credit: Photo by Matthew Visinsky/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
