A's Defeat Dodgers 6-4 on Ramon Laureano's 9th-inning Homer
09/24/2020 4:58am

Ramon Laureano broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-run homer and the Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 on Wednesday night in a matchup of West division champions.Laureano also had an RBI single in the seventh and made a diving catch in center field.Edwin Rios, who replaced Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner in the sixth, homered in his first at-bat in the eighth, tying it 4-all. It was the first run given up in 19 appearances this season by Jake Diekman 1-0, who had a 22-inning scoreless streak that dated to last Sept. 16.Stephen Piscotty singled in the ninth off Blake Treinen 3-3. With two outs, Laureano homered to the lower left-field seats, clocking a cardboard cutout in the face for a 6-4 lead.Liam Hendriks pitched the ninth for his 14th save.Oakland starter Sean Manaea allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. He struck out four and walked one.The As took a 3-0 lead in the first off Joe Kelly, who came out of the bullpen to start and promptly gave up consecutive doubles to Tommy La Stella and Robbie Grossman and walked Marcus Semien the first three batters he faced.Grossmans RBI double to deep left-center scored Oaklands first run. Mark Canhas sacrifice fly brought home Grossman on center fielder Cody Bellingers throwing error that also allowed Semien to score. The Dodgers closed to 3-2 on Max Muncys two-run drive in the third, giving him homers in back-to-back games.Laureanos RBI single extended Oaklands lead to 4-2 in the seventh. His diving catch in center field robbed Mookie Betts to end the Dodgers half of the inning. Betts was hitless in four at-bats, snapping his nine-game hitting streak. The Dodgers cut their deficit to 4-3 on Bellingers 12th homer, a shot to right field leading off the seventh that chased Manaea.Julio Uras made his first relief appearance of the season, entering in the third inning. Not starting seemed to work for the left-hander, who has struggled in the first inning of games. He gave up one run and two hits in six innings, struck out five and walked two.TRAINERS ROOMAthletics: INF-OF Chad Pinder strained right hamstring hasnt hit on the field yet and although he feels good, manager Bob Melvin said he cant guarantee Pinder will play when the team returns home.UP NEXTAthletics: RHP Mike Fiers 6-2, 4.67 ERA starts the series finale Thursday. Lightning Beat Stars 5-2 in Game 3 of Stanley Cup Final
09/24/2020 2:52am

Steven Stamkos scored on his first shot since February, left with injury and the Tampa Bay Lightning kept dominating without him, blowing the Dallas Stars out of an empty arena with a 5-2 rout in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday night to take the lead in the series.Even though he only skated five shifts for 2:47, the Lightning captain making his 2020 playoff debut 211 days after he last played in an NHL game gave the Lightning a jolt. He made the most of that time with a vintage Stamkos goal going around Esa Lindell and sniping a shot past Anton Khudobin. We were really excited, forward Alex Killorn said. He told us he was ready, he comes out, gets a shot on net and scores a goal. It really elevated our team. So happy for him to be back and be a part of this.Stamkos skated off gingerly at the end of his final shift in the first period and was not on the bench for the start of the second. He returned to the bench and took a few twirls to test out the injury but did not return. The Lightning were just fine with Stamkos offering moral support sitting in the middle of the bench. They got goals from all three of their first-line forwards, their top defenseman and their captain and big saves from their Vezina Trophy finalist goaltender, while the Stars best players were quiet once again or made big mistakes to contribute to the loss. Nikita Kucherov, Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Brayden Point and Ondrej Palat all scored for Tampa Bay, which was the better team from the start of the second period on.Khudobin was under pressure most of the night and allowed five goals on 29 shots before coach Rick Bowness replaced him at the start of the third with rookie Jake Oettinger. At the other end, Andrei Vasilevskiy made a few big saves among his 31, including a brilliant left pad stop on Corey Perry early in the game. The game was everything that has made Tampa Bay one of the best teams in hockey for more than half of the last decade. That included the return of Stamkos, the Lightnings leader who has been forced to watch while rehabbing a core muscle injury.Hes a threat, so hes just another thing for a team to think about when hes out there, coach Jon Cooper said Wednesday morning. Whether thats on the power play or 5-on-5, you get another player that the puck gets on his stick in the offensive zone, it might go in the net especially in a series where goals are at a premium.Stamkos, who last played Feb. 25, had surgery in early March and aggravated the injury at least once over the summer, showed that on his goal. As soon as teammates saw Stamkos scored, the bench into a spontaneous celebration perhaps unlike any goal during the playoffs. But goals were not at a premium for the Lightning on Wednesday night. Minutes after Hedman prevented a breakaway goal by speedy Stars forward Denis Gurianov, Kucherov took advantage of a brutal turnover by 21-year-old budding star Miro Heiskanen and scored on a breakaway of his own.Hedman scored his own goal in the second, his 10th to put him third all-time in goals by defenseman during a single postseason. Only Paul Coffey and Brian Leetch have more.Meanwhile, Dallas stars were not close to being their best players. Beyond Heiskanens turnover, top-line winger Alexander Radulov took two bad penalties and was demoted in the lineup, while Tyler Seguins goal drought reached a career-worst 12 games and Khuodbin was shaky.Fourth-liner Jason Dickinson scored the Stars only goal before the game was out of hand, and Heiskanens in the third period didnt make up for putting the puck right on Kucherovs stick for the breakaway. While Tampa Bay got a significant talent back, Dallas was without a key veteran role player. Forward Blake Comeau was ruled unfit to play after appearing to injure his right shoulder on a hit by Ryan McDonagh in Game 2.Nick Caamano made his NHL playoff debut in Comeaus place. He also last played in the minors 196 days ago.NOTES: Oettinger stopped the two shots he faced in relief. To make room for Stamkos, Tampa Bay scratched Carter Verhaeghe. Along with Comeau being out, goalie Ben Bishop, forward Radek Faksa and defenseman Stephen Johns remained unfit to play.UP NEXTGame 4 is Friday night with Game 5 on a back to back Saturday night.

Pilot's Actions Likely Caused Earnhardt Plane Crash, NTSB Says
09/23/2020 11:15pm

A pilots inability to maintain proper airspeed and the flight crews decision to continue an unstable approach and landing likely caused the crash of a small plane carrying race car driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family in 2019, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report released Wednesday. The NTSBs final accident report points to actions by the pilot and co-pilot in the Aug. 15, 2019 plane crash at an airport in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Earnhardt was with wife Amy, 15-month-old daughter Isla and two pilots when their Cessna Citation Latitude crashed and caught fire. The NTSB said the three passengers suffered minor injuries.NTSB investigators said part of the landing gear collapsed and a section of the right wing hit the runway as the plane bounced twice before touching down a third time with about 1,000 feet of paved surface remaining. The plane went through a chain-link fence before coming to rest on the edge of Tennessee Highway 91. Unable to escape through an emergency exit door above the wing, Earnhardt and his family managed to get out through the main cabin door as the plane caught fire, according to witness statements. Pilot Richard Pope told the NTSB that he was carrying extra speed on the approach to the runway because the plane slows down so easy, according to a summary of the pilots statements to the NTSB.Pope said the initial touchdown was pretty hard and the aircraft came off the runway. The flight crew reported that thrust reversers, which help an airplane decelerate during landing, were applied after the first touchdown.Co-pilot Jeffrey Melton said that after thrust was increased, the power never comes, the NTSB said in a previous report. Power was then pulled to idle, and the thrust reversers were again applied as the airplane touched down for the third time, the NTSB said.In Wednesdays final report, the NTSB said the pilots continuation of the unstable approach for landing and the decision not to initiate a go-around before the first touchdown resulted in a bounced landing, a loss of airplane control, a landing gear collapse, and a runway excursion.A go-around takes place when a pilot chooses to pull out of a landing approach and gains altitude before attempting another landing. Contributing to the accident was the pilots failure to deploy the speedbrakes during the initial touchdown, which may have prevented the runway excursion, the report said. The report listed the pilots inability to attain or maintain airspeed and the descent rate, plus the decision-making of the pilot, as probable causes of the crash.Earnhardt retired from full-time racing following the 2017 season and is now working as a NASCAR analyst for NBC Sports, though he has raced since the plane crash.

Chargers Doctor Punctured QB's Lung, Causing Sunday's Absence
09/23/2020 5:53pm

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor missed last Sundays game because a team doctor accidentally punctured his lung, according to a person familiar with the case. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because of medical restriction issues.u003cstrongu003eu003cemu003eDownload our free NBC 7 mobile app for u003ca hrefu0022https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nbc-7-san-diego/id331809469u0022u003eiOSu003c/au003e or u003ca hrefu0022https://play.google.com/store/apps/detailsidcom.nbcuni.nbcots.nbcsandiego.androidu0026amphlenUSu0022u003eAndroidu003c/au003e to get the latestu003c/emu003eu003c/strongu003e breaking news and in-depth COVID-19 coverage.Rookie Justin Herbert was the Chargers surprise starter in last Sundays 23-20 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Anthony Lynn said he didnt find out until less than five minutes before kickoff that Taylor would be unable to play.Herbert was told he was playing right as the Chargers were lining up to receive the opening kickoff.Taylor was taken to the hospital due to difficulties breathing after Lynn said he had a reaction to an injection. Taylor was released Sunday night and was at the Chargers complex on Monday. The NFL Players Association said on Wednesday that they have been in contact with Taylor and his agent, and have started an investigation into the matter. ESPN first reported about the punctured lung.Taylor was briefly on the Chargers injury report Friday due to a rib injury he suffered in the Sept. 13 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was taken off it, though, after fully participating in practice and taking all of the snaps with the first team.Lynn did not have an update on Taylors status on Monday. He said that if Taylor was 100, he would be the starter on Sunday against Carolina. However, with a punctured lung, the 10-year veteran is expected to be out indefinitely.Herbert, the sixth overall pick in Aprils draft, became the ninth quarterback since the merger to throw for over 300 yards in his debut, but he threw an interception late in the third quarter that the Chiefs converted into a tying touchdown.

Chicago Bears Legend Gale Sayers Dies at 77
09/23/2020 1:21pm

Chicago Bears legend Gale Sayers has passed away at the age of 77, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All those who love the game of football mourn the loss of one of the greatest to ever play this Game with the passing ofChicago BearslegendGale Sayers, Hall of Fame President and CEODavid Baker said in a statement Wednesday. He was the very essence of a team player quiet, unassuming and always ready to compliment a teammate for a key block. Gale was an extraordinary man who overcame a great deal of adversity during his NFL career and life. Sayers had been weakened by dementia, which was diagnosed more than five years ago. Football fans know well Gales many accomplishments on the field: a rare combination of speed and power as the games most electrifying runner, a dangerous kick returner, his comeback from a serious knee injury to lead the league in rushing, and becoming the youngest player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Bears Chairman George H. McCaskey said in a statement. People who werent even football fans came to know Gale through the TV movie Brians Song, about his friendship with teammate Brian Piccolo. Fifty years later, the movies message that brotherhood and love neednt be defined by skin color, still resonates. Coach Halas said it best, when presenting Gale for induction at the Hall of Fame: His like will never be seen again. On behalf of the McCaskey family, we offer our sincerest condolences to Ardie and the entire Sayers family. The Kansas Comet was a two-time All-American for the Jayhawks and dazzled with the Bears in a career that lasted just seven seasons because of knee injuries. He was a five-time All-Pro who remains the youngest player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, enshrined at 34 in 1977.He was Rookie of the Year in 1965 after being drafted one spot behind Dick Butkus with the No. 4 overall pick. He scored six touchdowns in a win over San Francisco at muddy Wrigley Field that season and made four Pro Bowls before hanging it up in 1971.He looked like he was gliding, Hall of Fame tight end and iconic coach Mike Ditka said. I mean, the field was muddy. Everybody was slipping and sliding, except him. It was the most unbelievable exhibition Ive seen in the history of the game. There probably was nothing like that. Just a great, great guy. Great guy. Gale was humble, never said a whole lot. But he was a super football player. Will miss a great friend who helped me become the player I became because after practicing and scrimmaging against Gale I knew I could play against anybody, former teammate and Hall of Famer Dick Butkus said in a statement. We lost one of the best Bears ever and more importantly we lost a great person.
