The Virginia Wine Festival is the oldest celebration of its kind on the East Coast and is regularly attended by wine aficionados from all over the country. Sixty of the state's top wineries are on hand to display their wares, but this celebration goes far beyond just tasting some of the best wines from the various participants. There are also seminars, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, gourmet food and an outdoor art and craft show. The event is held every September.

H Street Country Club offers an average golfing experience but includes a bit of built-in challenges. The course itself isn't quite evenly maintained and there is the issue of airplane noise due to its location, but overall it offers nice views of the city and the staff is friendly. Another amenity is the great menu at the concession, so either before or after your tee time, you can enjoy a hearty meal.

Referred to as "America's attic," the National Museum of American History offers an unprecedented collection of items that numbers to nearly three million entries. Everything from Dorothy's ruby red slippers, to one of the first Kermit the Frog puppets, to Julia Child's kitchen, to an astounding 34-foot Star Spangled Banner, are just a few of the numerous highlights. The kids will love the interactive displays, especially the ones that encourage invention and creativity.
