'The Blob,' A Smart Yet Brainless Organism Fit For Sci-Fi, Gets Its Own Exhibit

A brainless, bright-yellow organism that can solve mazes and heal itself is making its debut at a Paris zoo this weekend. At least so far, the blob is more benevolent than the ravenous star of its 1950s sci-fi film classic namesake. Time-lapsed videos of the blob show a slimy organism rapidly multiplying in size. How fast exactly The blob can sprint about four centimeters per hour , according to the Paris Zoological Park The blob is neither animal, nor plant. And although physarum polycephalum Latin for many-headed slime is classified as a type of slime mold, scientists now consider the creature unrelated to fungi. This species has been around for as many as 1 billion years, but its mysterious nature has attracted new fame thanks to the unveiling on Saturday of an exhibit dedicated to the single-cell organism at the Paris zoo. Partisan Divide Grows Over Opioid Settlement Plan

The nations response to the deadly opioid epidemic has been broadly bipartisan, but deep divides have emerged over a settlement plan offered last month by Purdue Pharma, the maker of Oxycontin. Democratic state attorneys general have generally panned the deal, which would force Purdues owners, member of the Sackler family, to give up control of their company while paying roughly $3 billion in cash from their personal fortunes. Joel Stein, the Democratic attorney general in North Carolina, wants the Sacklers to pay a lot more. They are more responsible than any for all the death and destruction our nation has experienced, Stein told NPR. They have to make a meaningful and certain contribution to clean up the mess they helped to create. So far, only two Democratic attorneys general nationwide have backed the plan, with more than 20 rejecting it.
