Famous for his haunting poetry and short stories, Poe began his life in this two-and-a-half story duplex. The home has been converted to represent and reflect the life of Poe and contains materials owned by Poe such as his writing desk, on public display. Visit the iconic, star-shaped Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. Best known for its role during the War of 1812, this fort is the one that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner." You can find several monuments and attractions commemorating George Washington throughout the states of Maryland and Virginia. The Washington Monument State Park contains the first monument built for the first President. Built in 1827, this historic stone monument still stands proud near the summit of South Mountain´s Monument Knob.
