THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — In a fundraising feat that has captured the imagination of his nation, a Dutch Olympian is approaching the end of a marathon swim along the route of an iconic speed skating race. Maarten van der Weijden, who beat leukemia and went on to win a gold medal in the 10-kilometer open water swim at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was about three-quarters of the way through the 200-kilometer (124-mile) swim by noon Monday. He is swimming along canals and rivers linking 11 towns in the northern province of Friesland that are used for a speed skating race in the years when cold winters freeze the entire route. Crowds along the waterways are cheering him on.Read more on NewsOK.com

Lionel Messi started the Spanish league right where he left off last season, and that's not a good sign for Real Madrid's weakened squad. Madrid doesn't have Cristiano Ronaldo to try to match Messi's achievements for the first time in nearly a decade, and dethroning the defending league champions will be that much harder if the Argentine playmaker dominates again. Messi, the league's top scorer last season, opened this year's campaign by scoring two goals in the team's 3-0 win over Alaves at Camp Nou on Saturday.Read more on NewsOK.com

When it comes to basketball bloodlines no one may have Heritage Hall sophomore Trey Alexander beat. His grandfather won a state title, his father, Steven Jr., won two titles at Midwest City and played some pro ball. Then there’s his two uncles who won titles with the Bombers too, Deangelo, even player for OU. Hoops is all natural for the fifteen year old. “No I wouldn’t say it’s always been easy,” Alexander said. “I would say, it’s been like second […]
We’ve known since Big 12 Football Media Days that Taylor Cornelius was OSU’s starting quarterback with Mike Gundy calling him, “our guy.” OSU’s second guy will be Dru Brown. Mike Gundy naming Brown back up quarterback on Sunday. Dru Brown hadn’t even been on campus a whole month since he transferred from Hawaii. However he did play in a system with the Rainbow Warriors that was very similar to Oklahoma State’s. It would appear Brown had little to no problems […]
To the Viktor go the spoils. That was the case for Oklahoma State for golfer Viktor Hovland. Just months removed from winning a national championship in Stillwater, Hovland won the 118th U.S. Amateur Championship by Stillwater Cove at Pebble Beach. Hovland took down Devon Bling of UCLA 6 and 5 to win. Hovland hit a bevy of incredible shots to propel his victory. On the 4th hole, Hovland found himself in a patch of ice plant. Instead of taking a […]

Texas rallied from an early five-run deficit to win with a four-run rally in the eighth inning. They're never out of a game. Profar starts a triple play 00:52 Aug. 16th, 2018 Jurado allowed six runs in six innings, but none after the second. He allowed five straight singles to open the game, leading to a five-run inning, and then gave up a leadoff homer to Kole Calhoun in the second. He did give up the home run to Calhoun on a ball that seemed elevated, but he did continue to get better as the game progressed." Mazara, Banister on win 01:26 Aug. 16th, 2018 Matt Moore earned the win with two scoreless innings. "His stuff was sharp," Banister said. With two runs having already scored to tie the game, Odor came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth. However, after the replay review, the call was overturned and the go-ahead run scored on the play. The right-hander went 0-1 with a 9.72 ERA in his first two starts for the Rangers. USA TODAY Sports The investigation probing Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer is on target to be completed on Sunday and the findings will be presented to the school’s board of trustees next week, the school announced Friday evening. Meyer was put on paid leave amid questions that arose over his handling of domestic violence allegations made against since-fired assistant coach Zach Smith. The school had previously announced that the independent working group – selected to examine how those within the athletic department handled the accusations made by Smith’s then-wife in 2015 – would have its investigation completed by Sunday. “Following receipt, the working group will share the report with the Board of Trustees in an executive session to be held next week,” the school said in the statement. "The most important thing is to get the right information so that we can make the best decisions going forward," Drake told on WOSU in his first public comments about the investigation. Courtney Smith, Zach Smith's ex-wife, said she was abused on multiple occasions and those within Ohio State's athletic department had knowledge of a 2015 incident. Zach Smith was not arrested for that alleged incident. Smith, a receivers coach and longtime assistant under Meyer, was fired last month after his court summons for trespassing was made public as part of Courtney Smith's application for a protection order. Both Courtney and Zach Smith have been interviewed by investigators. Or can the Sooners run the table in the Big 12 again like they did in 2016? With Josh Rosen in the NFL, UCLA has a wide-open quarterback competition this fall with less-promising prospects than Kyler Murray or Austin Kendall. Score prediction: Oklahoma 45, UCLA 31 Sept. 15: Oklahoma at Iowa State Oklahoma won't have to wait long for a chance to avenge its lone conference loss from a season ago. Score prediction: Oklahoma 34, Iowa State 27 Sept. 22: Oklahoma vs. Army It's been a while since the Sooners have had to prepare for a triple-option team, but that's exactly what they'll do later on this fall when Army comes to Norman. This will be the most unique game Oklahoma plays all year, and it's possible Riley tries to counter Army's ball-control offense with a running game of his own. Score prediction: Oklahoma 35, Texas 31 Oct. 20: Oklahoma at TCU The Sooners will have a bye week before facing off against the Horned Frogs, and they may need it. Score prediction: TCU 41, Oklahoma 37 Oct. 27: Oklahoma vs. Kansas State Oklahoma needed a dramatic touchdown by Rodney Anderson to defeat the Wildcats a year ago, but it's hard to see similar struggles in 2018. Score prediction: Oklahoma 41, Kansas State 20 Nov. 3: Oklahoma at Texas Tech Two years ago, Lubbock saw one of the most prolific offensive games in the history of college football. This year will be a different story — both Oklahoma and Texas Tech's defenses have improved, while the Red Raiders' offense has question marks — but look for a similar result. If WVU is fighting for a Big 12 title, it will give the Sooners all they want and more in this matchup. From cannon arms to wipeout pitches, here's a look at the most game-changing tools for each team: Angels: Shohei Ohtani's power Why it matters: Ohtani is one of the few left-handed hitters in the Angels' lineup, so his power bat has become a dangerous weapon against opposing right-handed pitchers. All 12 of Ohtani's home runs this season have come against righties, and most of them have traveled quite far. 8th, 2018 Astros: Jose Altuve's bat-to-ball skills Why it matters: No player in baseball has a better ability to put the bat on the ball than Altuve, a three-time AL batting champion and six-time All-Star whose streak of four consecutive seasons of at least 200 hits is in jeopardy because of a right knee injury that's put him out of action for two weeks. Altuve's 10 consecutive hits 01:36 May 27th, 2018 Athletics: Matt Chapman's throwing arm Why it matters: Chapman's elite arm is perhaps the best in baseball, and the A's benefit from this weapon on a nightly basis. The strength of his arm allows Chapman to play deeper than any other third baseman in the Majors, which helps him get to more balls than any other player at the hot corner. Chapman's remarkable throw 00:08 Jul. 31st, 2018 Mariners: Edwin Diaz's wipeout slider Why it matters: The 24-year-old right-hander has an electric arm and one of the top fastballs in the Majors, but it's been the development of his putaway pitch, the nasty slider, that has elevated him into one of the elite closers in the game this season and the runaway leader in saves in the AL. Diaz typically sets hitters up with his upper-90s fastball, then closes them out with a wicked slider that has racked up a 55.3 percent whiff rate, the fourth-highest percentage among the 152 relievers who've generated at least 100 swings from the pitch this year. 16th, 2018 Rangers: Joey Gallo's power Why it matters: The Rangers are looking to the future, and their strength is their young offensive talent. Gallo is not only among the league leaders in home runs, but he also leads the Majors -- going into this week -- with 16 home runs of 110-plus mph exit velocity and 13 that traveled with a projected distance of 420 feet or greater. By Michael Doutey There are questions surrounding some key positions for Oklahoma State ahead of the 2018 season. We know the questions all too well. Questions about the quarterbacks. There are questions about who will fill the James Washington and Marcell Ateman roles. The defense is typically always in questions, but the defense has more […]
By Michael Doutey Gone are James Washington, Oklahoma State’s all-time leading receiver with 4,414 yards, Marcell Ateman and Chris Lacy. Between those three, OSU is losing 2,969 yards from the 5,059 yards the Cowboys had in receiving in 2017. Not just that, but OSU is losing 21 touchdowns from that group. Even though the Cowboys […]
By Michael Doutey There hasn’t been a quarterback competition in Stillwater in several years. Mason Rudolph took over in November of 2014, only relinquishing some of the duties to JW Walsh in some short yardage situations in 2015. Rudolph leaves Stillwater as OSU’s all-time leading passer with 13,618 yards and threw the most touchdowns in […]
