For over 35 years, the African American Museum in Philadelphia has been honoring the history, art and culture of African Americans. This museum is particularly notable as the first of its kind to be funded and built by a municipality. The carefully preserved and restored Georgian-style house was supposedly the home to Betsy Ross, sewer of the first American flag, and her first husband, John Ross, during the American Revolution. Set aside some time to visit the oldest surviving botanical garden in the United States. Bartram’s Garden covers 46 acres in Fairmount Park, and is open to the public for free admission. Try taking a tour inside the historic garden area (the original 8-acre garden begun in 1728), the historic stone house, through the elaborate grove and the largest variety of North American plants in the world.
