In 1848 a US-Mexico treaty established the Rio Grande as the boundary between the two countries but as the river channel naturally changed course, the location of the border became unclear and both countries began a 100-year, challenging conversation.
Finally in 1966 an agreement was reached concerning ownership of the Chamizal, previously & privately owned Mexican land that had shifted north by establishing the Chamizal National Memorial which offers a history museum to learn about the intricate story of this international dispute and its peaceful resolution along with national parks, an indoor theater and an outdoor amphitheater with plenty of year-long events.

Journey with an open heart to discover what makes the desert a sacred beautiful sanctuary as it hides a well of history and lore by jaunting out to Hueco Tanks State Park where for thousands of years people trekked to these rock hills for the rainwater pooled in natural rock basins, huecos (“whey-coes”). Visitors today marvel at the imagery left by ancient people and hike, rock climb, bird watch, study nature and history, picnic and stargaze.
Visitors can take both guided and self-guided tours to view rock imagery including a stop by their interpretive center in a historic ranch house to learn about the park and its history. The park store at headquarters sells gifts and other unique items including apparel wear and classic scenes of the area. Hueco Tanks is mainly a day-use park with 20 campsites and reserve permits are a must.
Keystone Heritage Park is an archeological site, an archaic wetlands and a botanical garden making it the perfect spot for birdwatchers. It is home to many species of birds and is a stop on a migratory route with over 193 species of birds have been spotted here, including 22 species considered rare by the Audubon Society.
