Happy 200th birthday to the woman who dared

The media tributes to Susan B. Anthony on the anniversary of her 200th birthday are many and glowing. But the press mocked her mercilessly in during her crusade for womens suffrage. Three years before Susan B. Anthony and a small group of women cast their ballots for president in Rochester in 1872 in an audacious act of defiance that jump-started the womens suffrage movement, she addressed a gathering in Detroit on the cause. Susan B. Anthony looked down upon a fair audience at Young Mens Hall last evening, though the majority went there, just as people every day go into menageries, to see how the animal looked, was how the Detroit Free Press led its report of the event.

Monroe County lowers parents fees for child care subsidies

The Bello administration estimates the change could save families $560 per year. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello has unveiled three new initiatives aimed at improving working parents access to child care subsidies. For many working parents, child care can be both an economic necessity and a barrier to advancement and greater opportunity, Bello said Thursday in announcing the effort.

Assembly member Peter Lawrence becomes the latest in a string of Republican state legislators to announce he will not run for re-election this year. Peter Lawrence, a Republican who represents the towns of Greece, Ogden, and Parma in the 134th Assembly District, announced Wednesday that he will not run for re-election this year. His announcement follows those of several Republican state legislatorswho are bowing out of political life amid a Democratic resurgence, including senators Joseph Robach and Rich Funke, who represents areas on the east and west side of Monroe County.
