See the stars, or at least a place where they study the stars, at the University of Pittsburgh’s Allegheny Observatory. This national historic landmark has been a vital part of American astronomical research since 1859. Nowadays, the Allegheny Observatory is open to free public tours from April until the end of October.
Get active at Highland Park. Located in the Highland Park neighborhood, the municipal park of the same name offers a variety of outdoor activities for people of all ages during all seasons. Visit the Pittsburgh Zoo to see the wildlife, learn about the importance of drinking water at the reservoirs, climb up Mount Bigelow or take advantage of the two sand volley ball courts, tennis courts, walking trails, and playgrounds.
Sneak in a mini-retreat with your date at the ESSpa Kozmetika day spa, where you will be romantically refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated. Couples packages vary, but most include a champagne toast on arrival, an indulgent, 60-minute side-by-side massage, a four-course gourmet meal by candlelight and a dozen roses presented before departure.
You may have to drive a bit to get to the Big Butler Fair, but the trip is worth it. One of the largest and best festivals in Western Pennsylvania, Big Butler is a chance to enjoy fireworks, the midway, games, demolition derbies, concerts and truck pulls that are not typically seen in Pittsburgh.
