Step into the multi-faceted beauty of the human spirit and enjoy the fusion with the splendor of nature by spending quality time at Chamizal National Memorial. In 1848 a US-Mexico treaty established the Rio Grande as the boundary between the two countries but as the river channel naturally changed course, the location of the border became unclear and both countries began a 100-year, challenging conversation. Finally in 1966 an agreement was reached concerning ownership of the Chamizal, previously & privately owned Mexican land that had shifted north by establishing the Chamizal National Memorial which offers a history museum to learn about the intricate story of this international dispute and its peaceful resolution along with national parks, an indoor theater and an outdoor amphitheater with plenty of year-long events.
