Despite the fact that the Battleship Wisconsin is located in Norfolk, die-hard history buffs don't mind the drive at all. This impressive battleship museum is one of the largest and the last ever built by the United States Navy. When you visit, you can take a dramatic walk on its deck on a self-guided tour and see other parts of the ship. A gift shop as well as several excellent photo opportunities are available at this popular historic attraction.

From an historic standpoint, the facility is significant because it is the first planetarium built by a public school system in the state of Virginia. But this attraction also offers visitors a chance to gaze into the night sky and be amazed at the intricate patterns and formations that make up the constellations everyone has heard about. The staff is highly knowledgeable and can answer any questions you may have. Also, there are various lectures and special presentations on the schedule. The Chesapeake Veteran's Memorial is an impressively designed memorial that commemorates the service and ultimate sacrifice of our nation's men and women who are serving or have served in in all of the branches of the military. The memorial can be found on the municipal center grounds and features a marble structure that features the names of over 1,800 soldiers who have paid for our freedom with their lives.

Even though Fort Norfolk requires a little extra effort to visit if you are in Chesapeake, the short drive is well worth it if you are a fan of history. This fort is the last remaining structure of an original 19 forts that were built back in 1794 on the order of President George Washington. When you arrive you will be immediately struck by the fort's outward design, and once you step through the archway that leads to the interior, you will feel like you have traveled back in time. The staff members on hand will be happy to answer any of your questions. There is also an expansive 4-acre landscape that surrounds this historical site.
