In a world where art continues to be created with the help of a computer, it is refreshing to see artisans who use basic materials to construct something truly memorable. While many of these individuals use various materials to create their art, the ones who are well versed in the practice of woodcarving are the stars whose work is celebrated every year in Mesa at the Annual Desert Woodcarving Show and Sale. This art festival of sorts features wood sculptures by some of the most talented local, regional and national woodcarvers who all convene for this very popular annual event held every February.

There is no doubt that the Annual Flagg Gem and Mineral Show is one jewel of an event when it takes place every January in Mesa. There are plenty of activities planned over the course of this event that includes special presentations for kids, who are treated to free mineral samples in an effort to educate and familiarize them with these visually appealing natural resources. The festival features over 80 vendors who are on hand selling minerals, fossils and gems as well as educational information. This free event is usually held in the early part of the year and is sponsored by the Arizona Mineral and Mining Museum Foundation.

Spirits connect in many ways at the annual Dia De Los Muertos Festival. This is also known as the Day of the Dead Festival that takes place every year at the end of October. This community celebration features a striking community altar as well as live music and special performances that depict various aspects of this traditional religious event. The festival also features delicious food and a mercado that offers an assortment of Dia de los Muertos items that includes jewelry and arts and crafts.

Despite the fact that Mesa offers many fun and entertaining activities as one of Arizona's premiere cities, the one thing that it can't offer is tropical island fun. That is all about to change with the Annual Island Kine Fest that is held every May in Mesa. The goal of this two-day event is to bring an island-style festival to the city and celebrate it with a variety of entertainment and activities. These include live music acts, island food handicrafts and other items for sale by various participating vendors. The weekend-long celebration is anchored by a big concert on Saturday evening.
