Since 2000, the Movement: Detroit Electronic Music Festival has existed in one incarnation or another on Memorial Day weekend. As its name states, DEMF brings together musicians and DJs who produce some of the best electronic music in the nation. Located in Midtown Detroit’s Cultural Center Historic District, this 80,000-square-foot museum has been around since 1928, making it both America’s largest and oldest museum dedicated to a metropolitan history. The exhibits and attractions here are both interesting and engaging.

The ornate Fox Theatre stands out as one of Detroit’s most spectacular performing arts centers. Originally built as a movie palace in 1928, this enormous theater underwent a redesign in the 1980s and reemerged in the public eye as the crown jewel in the Grand Circus Park Historic District. See everything from concerts to Broadway plays in this 5,048-seat entertainment venue.

The world’s largest institution dedicated to African American culture, the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History serves a dual purpose–it is both a museum of artifacts and an incubator of cultural retention and growth.
