Providence embraces the sights, sounds and tastes of Central America with the Central American Festival that takes place every fall. The event is coordinated by the Guatemalan American Association of Rhode Island. Every June, Providence hosts a cultural celebration that is truly vibrant. The Day of Portugal and Portuguese Heritage promotes the various contributions of the Portuguese people to the culture and fabric of life in Rhode Island. The festival is held on June 10th which is historically significant because that is the day that famous Portuguese poet Luis Vaz de Camoes died in 1580. Various aspects of the culture are celebrated, but most significantly, the event is designed to educate future generations about the importance of passing on their traditions.
The arrival of the warmer weather in Providence signals the end of winter and the fast-approaching summer. It also means that West Broadway Neighborhood's Annual Block Party will be happening soon! Held every June, this festival takes place on Hudson Street. Enjoy lots of local music, roving entertainment from Chifferobe, a dunk tank, a bouncy house, a photo booth and lots of excellent food. The proceeds from this event go to benefit the Neighborhood Association and its programs.
Every summer, one of Providence's favorite attractions, the Roger Williams Park Zoo, throws a party that is not to be missed. The Zoobilee: Feast with the Beasts is held every June to raise funds for the continued operation of the zoo. There's plenty of music, dancing, and an opportunity to tour the zoo. There are also several tastes to experience at this festival, as dozens of the area's best restaurants, caterers and bars offer samples for you to enjoy. Plus, a silent auction and a "wildly" unique raffle add to the fun.
