Support our fight to prevent violence and abuse. A group of advocates in 1974 founded ChildBuilders. Seven women came together to discuss their concern for the lack of treatment facilities in Houston for children with mental health disorders. Our work has evolved from expanding treatment options to preventing the abuse and trauma that contributes to mental illness. We have done extensive research on child abuse prevention, nurturing parenting, and positive school climate. Although we can't prevent childhood adversity, we teach children skills to reduce the risk of trauma. At ChildBuilders, we empower children, parents, and teachers. We save animals and help our neighbors care for the pets they love. Friends For Life was founded in 2002 and introduced the no-kill shelter model to Houston. Every day, we work hard to be innovative, improve, and track results to find the most effective ways to save lives. Every animal matters, and we will not stop until every animal has a safe home. Friends For Life has a wealth of resources like the pet food & supply bank, financial assistance for pet owners, and pet behavior support. We host programs and events; working in different neighborhoods and connecting with new friends, we find innovative ways to improve animals and people's conditions. We began our unique Thinking Outside the Shelter program in 2008, offering support to pet owners so that they may keep their animals in their homes and out of the shelter system.
