Batten down the hatches and prepare yourself for the Buffalo Bayou Regatta, Texas' largest canoe and kayak race open to paddlers ages 12 and up where are all encouraged to take part in a most memorable race along the scenic Buffalo Bayou. People from all over come to compete in this longstanding Houston tradition that begins near San Felipe Street and concludes at Allen's Landing. Free shuttle service is provided for all participants for the 15-mile exciting race that concludes with festivities, including live zydeco music, food and drinks, and trophies for the top three paddlers in Teams, Recreational Canoe, Recreational Kayak and Unlimited Divisions. The regatta is held annually, so check their website for specific registration details.
Catch one of your favorite musicians or bands at the Arena Theater, a legend in Houston's music scene. As one of Houston's oldest concert venues, the Arena Theatre is notable for its arena-in-the-round style and excellent acoustics that have showcased such legendary and notable performers as Willie Nelson, BB King, Tom Jones, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Clint Black, and Huey Lewis and the News. The intimate setting feels more like a private event than a concert venue. All seats are less than 60 feet from the stage, giving you the feeling that you are part of the show, not just a spectator. The stage revolves, too, so every seat in the house is an excellent one. Full-service bars and a secure parking garage are among the many amenities here.
Explore the adventurous exhibits at the Downtown Aquarium, featuring interactive displays with themes like the Louisiana Swamp, Shipwreck, Rainforest and Sunken Temple.
Visit one of Houston's most venerable wine bars on your next romantic date. La Carafe is located inside the remnants of Old Market Square, which is listed on the National Register for Historic Places.
