Christmas will be here before you know it, and that holiday spirit is most definitely alive and well at the 25th Annual Court End Christmas held in early December. Several historic downtown sites host a free holiday open house that includes children's activities, reenactments, carriage rides and special appearances. So don't forget the eggnog and mistletoe!
Every fall, the Richmond Children's Festival is held and always draws plenty of visitors who not only enjoy the fun, food and music, but they're also glad to support a good cause. The event benefits the Greater Richmond chapter of SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now). It's a whole day of fun that includes hands on activities for the kids, a pumpkin patch, live music, live demonstrations, a food court and picnic area, and lots of great fun for the whole family.
Shockoe-On-The-Half Shell is an annual event that draws nearly 4,000 attendees, and with good reason. This annual festival celebrates oysters, music and beer in the historic 17th Street Farmer's Market in Downtown Shockoe Bottom in Richmond. So bring your appetite and your friends, and get ready for one of the city's most deliciously fun events!
The State Fair of Virginia seems to encapsulate all that's great about the state. Come and see competitions, horticulture and crop exhibitions, livestock shows, horse shows, as well as an unbelievable selection of arts and crafts and food, too! Plus, the world-famous carousel will be there, so don't even think about leaving before taking a colorful, musical spin. The festival is held in late September into early October.
Richmond's 2nd Street Festival is held every October. Like many of the historical places and events that are associated with the city, this festival links the historical past to the prosperous present in the city's notable African American district where the event is held. Enjoy great soul food, live jazz and a festival that echoes back to the celebrations held back in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. It's an excellent party you won't want to miss.
